"Physical Models in Action"

Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC), Queen's University of Belfast
Friday 15 December 2006, 10am - 5pm.

This meeting will focus on physical modelling (and related topics, such as 'augmented acoustics'), and in particular on its use in practical/creative applications, such as performance, composition, sound synthesis, installations, sound projection, and computer games. The main objective is to create and stimulate a stronger interaction and exchange of ideas between engineers, scientists, musicians, artists, and listeners/users on this topic.

The planned schedule includes a concert (featuring works and performances that make use of physical models), a small number of invited talks, and a parallel demo/poster session, during which participants will demonstrate a variety of real-time and non-real-time systems in a large space. The research groups from the Aalborg University, University of Edinburgh, and Queen's Univeristy have already proposed various exciting contributions, including new controllers, models, implementations, collections of short sound examples and pieces, and augmented instruments. Suggestions for further demos are very welcome, and indeed encouraged.

Programme

The programme includes:

* two invited presentations:
  • Stefan Bilbao
    "Physical Modeling Sound Synthesis in Practice"
  • Stefania Serafin
    "Physical Models for Interactive Applications"
* Live performance by MIAMI
* One or two tape pieces, including:
  • "The Wall Woodpeckers" (Ricardo Climent, 2005)
* General discussion
* Parallel demo/poster session, including:
  • A new controller developed by students from Aalborg University
  • A new controller for a virtual violin, modelled with novel block-based physical modelling techniques (Giovanni de Sanctis, Marco Foco)
  • A real-time controlled physical model of a Catalan woodwind instrument (Josep Comajuncosas)
  • A real-time Max/MSP multi-string model with percussive audio-driven control (Pedro Rebelo, Maarten van Walstijn)
  • A real-time model of the prepared piano (ppiano~), developed by Stefan Bilbao and Thomas Resch, demonstrated by Stravos Didakis
  • A real-time model of the vocal tract using a digital waveguide mesh (Damian Murphy)

Demos & Posters

All participants of the demo/poster session are asked to supply some form of 'poster' alongside their demonstration, which displays information about the system that they are demonstrating. This can vary from one A4 with some scriblings on it to a glossy A0 poster; i.e. no formal criteria are set.

Please also let m.vanwalstijn@qub.ac.uk know as soon as possible if you require any particular equipment.

There are still opportunities for further participants in the parallel demo/poster session. If you would like to demonstrate a system that involves physical modelling or a related method/technology, please contact m.vanwalstijn@qub.ac.uk as soon as possible.

Expenses

There is a budget to cover travel expenses for all those who attend the meeting. Those based in the UK based are encouraged to fly in and out on the day, in order to avoid accommodation expenses (unless they are happy to cover this themselves). Please get in touch with m.vanwalstijn@qub.ac.uk if you think flying in and out on the day will not be possible; we will be able to cover some additional expenses for a limited number of cases.

Accommodation as well as travel expenses will be covered for all active participants (i.e. invited speakers, demonstrators, performers, etc). Normally we would cover one night only, in some cases a longer stay can be covered.
