2 day conference of the Musical Acoustics Network in association with the Groupe Specialise Acoustique Musicale

Conference Organisers: Andrew Earis (RCM), Lewis Jones and Allan Seago (London Metropolitan University), with Murray Campbell (University of Edinburgh) and Joel Gilbert (Le Mans).

Programme

The full conference programme is outlined below. Each day will include paper sessions, discussion, and a short musical performance related to the main themes of the conference. There will also be poster displays at London Metropolitan.

Wednesday 20th September
Royal College of Music (Britten Theatre) - 10:00 to 17:30
Main themes: Musical Performance and Historical Instruments

  • Nelly Poidevin: The reconstruction of early period bows
  • Colin Gough: The Historical Use of Violin Vibrato in the 20th Century
  • Charles Besnainou: stringed instruments (title tbc)
  • Anne Houssay: Violin Strings, Setup, Bows and Performance Techniques
  • Peyman Heydarian: The Santur instrument (Persian Hammered Dulcimer) and applying audio DSP techniques to musical mode recognition
  • Craig Sapp & Andrew Earis: CHARM: Style, performance and meaning in Chopin's Mazurka's
  • Christophe d'Allessandro: Sound documentation of historical pipe organs: a case study
  • Adam Stansbie: Spatial and acoustic consideration that may arise when using loudspeakers within the concert environment

In addition, there will be a pre-lunch session describing research and research resources at the Royal College of Music. Dr Aaron Williamon will talk about the work of the Centre for the Study of Music Performance. Professor Richard Thompson (Director of Studies, Imperial College Department of Physics) will talk about the joint Physics/Music course offered by Imperial College and the RCM, and other acoustics research collaborations and Melissa Daly (4th year BSc Physics/Music) will present her recent work on inharmonicity in historical keyboard instruments. The session will conclude with Dr Paul Banks (Head, Centre for Performance History) talking about the RCM's research collections - instruments, portraits and concert programmes.
