Research:

Currently I am Director of the UK Centre for Astrobiology

My lab is interested in life in extreme environments. Our particular interest is in the interactions of microbes with minerals and the function and diversity of microbes in rocky environments.

We apply this work to diverse areas in astrobiology and earth sciences.

Teaching:

I currently teach the pre-honours Astrobiology course (PHYS08051). I organise (and teach on) the SUPA Astrobiology and Search for Life course (SUPAASL) and I teach and run a Massive Open On-Line Learning (MOOC) introductory course on Astrobiology (https://www.coursera.org/learn/astrobiology/home/info).

If you’re interested in Astrobiology or in teaching it, I have written a textbook: ‘Astrobiology: Understanding Life in the Universe’ published by Wiley-Blackwell. The companion web site also includes powerpoint slides for 21 lectures on astrobiology as well as exam questions and answers, allowing you to establish a complete introductory astrobiology course at your university.
