The particle ID detector was designed and constructed by the Edinburgh and Glasgow nuclear physics groups. It was successfully installed and commissioned with the Crystal Ball detector in summer 2004. The detector is designed to separate different  species of charged hadrons produced in photoreactions. Experimental data showing the clean separation of protons and pions can be seen below.
