TAPS Experiments at Mainz

TAPS Experiments at Mainz

In the years 1999 and 2000 the TAPS detector array is used for an experimental campaign in Mainz. I am involved in these experiments in the A2 hall of the MAMI accelerator lab with a (gamma,pi0N) experiment. Two photos taken in December 1998 show the assembly of the detectors during the setup phase.

Looking upstream the three TAPS blocks on either side of the beam are partially filled with the BaF detectors. The Forward Wall frame is still empty. In the background, just in front of the concrete wall, is a Tübingen-Edinburgh (gamma,2N) test experiment with two germanium detectors in place.

Three of the TAPS block about to be filled.

In October and November 1999 the Glasgow colleagues ran their coherent neutral pion production experiment.

The TAPS detectors are supplemented with two NaI detectors looking for decay gamma rays coming from excited final states. The bunch of seven photo tubes is reading out the upper NaI detector.

Looking close one can distinguish the plexiglas vacuum tube with a red target holder in place located between the two NaI detectors below and above.

A closer view of vacuum pipe, target and holder in place. The top NaI detector can be seen hovering above the tube.

The graphite target (left) and the water target (right) used in this Glasgow experiment.

These four photos have been taken in November 1999. The original JPEG files 1800x1200 in size can be provided if desired.
