Procedures and Rules for
the Physical Crystallography Award
1. The Award will be made by the Committee of the Physical
Crystallography Group of the BCA (also known as the Structural Condensed Matter
Physics Group of the IoP).
2. The award will be made for what is, in the opinion of the committee,
the best recently published work (say 2 or 3 papers) by a relatively young
person in the field of Physical Crystallography. The recipient will be expected to give an oral
presentation of his or her work, normally at the BCA Spring Meeting. This will normally be a condition of the
Award and will only be waived in exceptional circumstances.
3. In addition to the prestige associated with receipt of the Award and
the opportunity to deliver the Prize lecture, there will be a monetary sum
associated with the Award whose value will be set from time to time.
4. Nominations should be sent to the Chairman of the PCG and should be
accompanied by: a brief CV of the nominee; copies of the papers on which the
nomination is based; and a supporting statement from the nominator, including
comments on the part the nominee has played in any research work published
jointly with others.
5. In the case that voting is equal, the Chairman will have a casting
vote unless any of the tied nominees is from the Chairman's department in which
case the Vice-Chair will have the casting vote.
The voting will be conducted by the PCG Secretary.

7. The award will normally be made to a candidate of age 35 years or
younger, except that allowance (up to around 7 years at the discretion of the
Committee) should be made for a career break in which a candidate was not able
to carry out research.
8. Members of the PCG Committee are not eligible for nomination.
9. Nominations of candidates from within the same Department as the
nominator will not normally be valid, and will be considered only under
exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the Committee.
