During my PhD, with my supervisor Professor Jean-Pierre Hansen and with Dr. Simone Melchionna (who was a postdoc at that time), I developed a method for calculating electrostatic interactions in systems containing ionic fluids in the presence of dielectric (polarizable) objects. This method involves maximising a functional on a grid that spans the surface of the dielectric body.
I also carried out various calculations of the electrostatic interactions in simple geometries relevant to biological ion channels. In particular I studied electrostatic interactions of charges and dipoles near a polarizable membrane as well as the effective interaction between charges within dielectric cavities.
