How to obtain access to COSMIC
Description of procedure for applying for access to COSMIC facilities.
Registration Procedure New Members
- Before you start registering as a member, make sure you meet the Conditions for Access to Facilities
- Register as a Laser User, which involves:
- If you have not used lasers of class 3a or above before at the University of Edinburgh you must:
- Get eye test from Optometrist on Forest Rd
- Details and letter for optometrist from Jochen Arlt - Physics, JCMB Rm 5401, Tel ext: 51 7066
- Attend laser safety training course (about 1 hours)

- Alternatively, directly contact Colin Farmery - Health & Safety, Tel ext: 50 2818
- Obtain a Laser User registration form (LR3) from Jochen
- Complete form and submit to Jochen
- If you are to be using biological materials, you must complete University of Edinburgh Biological Safety Registration procedures. Contact the COSMIC Biological Safety Officer for details: Cait MacPhee, Physics, JCMB Rm 5417.
- Read, understand and agree with the COSMIC Health & Safety Policy.
- Request account for this web site from Jochen Arlt. After logging on enter your contact details.
- Complete COSMIC New User Declaration form, and submit to Jochen Arlt (COSMIC Lab Manager), Physics, JCMB Room 5401, or Jason Crain (COSMIC Director), Physics, JCMB Room 5405.
- In particular, ensure that you provide: name, location, phone, email.
- Obtain access card from Colin Thomson, Physics, JCMB Rm 5313, Tel: 50 5269
- Obtain suitable training to use the microscopes, as per your requirements (see this web site, or contact Lab Manager)
- Once this registration procedure is completed you can proceed with Booking Common User Facilities.
